Topic: Learning to Share Land
The Treaty Land Sharing Network (TLSN) is a group of rural landholders and Indigenous people who are working to make land accessible and safe for Indigenous people to practice their way of life on the prairies.
Speakers Brenda and Luke are both members of the TLSN Coordinating Committee, and will share about how TLSN came to be, how it works, and what it’s been like to share land through the network.
Luke Wonneck is a settler with ancestors from Germany, Scotland, Ireland, France, and Iceland. Like many of these ancestors, he loves growing food and hopes to one day make a living as a farmer. For now, he is doing his PhD on how Indigenous access to land in the prairies has changed over the past century.
Brenda Bohmer is a third-generation farmer living in Treaty 6 Territory near Bawlf, Alberta (in Camrose County). Her grandparents emigrated from Norway starting in 1905 and she feels grateful to be growing food and crops on the same lands that she grew up on. Being a member of the Treaty Land Sharing Network aligns with her intentions to connect, to learn, and to share in meaningful ways as we practice being Treaty people here on the prairies.
