World Down Syndrome Day – Sunday Service
A compassionate community of free religious thought, inviting all people to rest, grow, and serve the world.

The Edmonton Down Syndrome Society (EDSS) began in 1988 when four
families, inspired by their shared journey, started meeting to support one another and
share information. Initially informal gatherings, the group grew into a registered
charitable organization by 1995, hosting three national conferences for the Canadian
Down Syndrome Society. EDSS has since launched impactful initiatives, including the
Pediatric Down Syndrome Medical Clinic at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, which now
serves over 600 children. In 2006, EDSS opened its Centre for Excellence, offering
quality programming, therapies, and support for families across northern Alberta. Today,
EDSS continues to collaborate with local, provincial, and national organizations to
empower families and promote inclusion and is celebrating its 30th anniversary!
From the speaker, Julie Boucher:
I provide personalized support and guidance to individuals with Down syndrome and
their families as they navigate various systems and services, including accessing
government support such as guardianship, PDD, FSCD, and AISH, as well as
advocating for support and accommodations in schools, childcare, and workplaces. I
also deliver presentations to the community and schools to teach them more about the
Down syndrome community and their abilities.
Westwood runs weekly services, September through June, bringing a variety of speakers on a wide range of topics. Please check back for updates on this Sunday’s service.
There is an opportunity for ‘social time’ in person (with coffee) or online following the service – a time to connect with friends old and new.
