Topic: An Urban Indigenous Story of Sacred Space in a City, Beyond Land Acknowledgements

LEWIS CARDINAL is a lifelong Indigenous educator and communicator; one of his recent projects has been creation of a unifying cultural site for Indigenous peoples in Alberta and beyond. Called kihciy askiy — Cree for sacred land — sweat lodges, pipe ceremonies, traditional teachings and land-based learning happen there. The first project of its kind in the country kihciy askiy is centrally located in Edmonton’s river valley across the road from the Whitemud Equine Centre. It includes four sweat lodges, tipis, a pavilion and a gathering area. Lewis maintains a hectic work schedule, including many speaking engagements. Anyone who has heard him speak, wants to again!

Guest Speaker: Lewis Cardinal
